About
DeVotchKa aren't easy to pin down, and that's exactly the point. The Denver quartet plays with an arsenal of instruments that includes theremin, sousaphone, bouzouki, violin and accordion, weaving together sounds that land somewhere between spaghetti western, Eastern European folk and carnival midway. Nick Urata's voice ties it all together, and The New Yorker once described it as carrying "a hint of Rocky Mountain loneliness". The band built their following the hard way, through self released records and relentless touring, including early stints as a backing band for burlesque shows and time on the road with Dita Von Teese. The big turning point came when first time directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris tapped them to score Little Miss Sunshine, which went on to earn four Academy Award nominations. Their contribution scored a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack. Seven studio albums in, from SuperMelodrama in 2000 through to This Night Falls Forever in 2018, DeVotchKa have never really chased the mainstream, and somehow that stubbornness has only made their cult fanbase more devoted.
