About
Also known as: Kaoru Ishibashi
Kishi Bashi, the performing name of Kaoru Ishibashi, builds his live show entirely around violin and vocal looping, beatboxing, and whistling, a one man orchestral experience that has drawn comparisons to Andrew Bird and Owen Pallett. His 2012 debut album 151a, released on Joyful Noise Recordings, caught the ear of NPR's Bob Boilen, who named Kishi Bashi his favorite new artist of that year, praising the record's radiant, uplifting soundscape. The album's title is a nod to the Japanese phrase 一期一会, meaning something close to 'once in a lifetime.' His third studio album Sonderlust was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and his fourth, Omoiyari, accompanied a documentary film he made about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, later acquired by MTV Documentaries and released on Paramount+. He also composed the score for the Apple TV+ series Stillwater and wrote the theme for Shrill. Before going solo, he was a founding member of New York electronic rock act Jupiter One and spent time touring as violinist with Regina Spektor and of Montreal.
