DeVotchKa started life as a backing band for burlesque shows in Denver, and that theatrical, anything goes spirit never really left them. The four piece pulls from an almost absurdly wide palette: sousaphone, theremin, bouzouki, violin, accordion and trumpet all share space in their sound, landing somewhere between spaghetti western ballads and Eastern European folk, with Nick Urata's voice holding it all together. The New Yorker once pinned it as having "a hint of Rocky Mountain loneliness" in it, which is about right. Their song "How It Ends" broke them to a broader audience after appearing in the trailer for Everything Is Illuminated and a Gears of War 2 campaign, but it was scoring the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine alongside composer Mychael Danna that really shifted things. That work earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack. Their seventh album, This Night Falls Forever, came out in 2018 on Concord Records, showing they still have plenty to say.
