Formed out of the wreckage of a Black Sabbath falling out, Dio built one of heavy metal's most distinctive catalogues across ten studio albums. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the band's sole constant presence, anchoring a revolving lineup that at various points included guitarists Vivian Campbell, Craig Goldy, and Doug Aldrich. Their 1983 debut Holy Diver landed two MTV hits with "Rainbow in the Dark" and the title track, setting the tone for a run of fantasy driven, hard riffing records through the decade. The band's story has real peaks and valleys. The mid 1990s saw a deliberate move away from fantasy themes toward grittier modern subject matter, and not everyone followed them there. The 2000 concept album Magica brought many fans back, returning to the sound that made them and cracking the Billboard independent charts at number 13. Dio sold over 50 million records worldwide before Ronnie James Dio's death in 2010 brought the band to a close.
