About

Disco Inferno were never going to trouble the charts, but that turned out to be beside the point. The Essex trio spent the early 1990s quietly dismantling what a guitar band could sound like, feeding their instruments through Roland samplers and building tracks from running water, car crashes, breaking glass, and angry voices rather than looping record crates. Critics now count them as one of the first wave post rock acts, though at the time they were playing to bar staff in half empty venues while Britpop swallowed everything around them. Their 1994 album D. I. Go Pop is the centrepiece of their catalogue, eight tracks where basslines carry the melody and collages of found sound do the rest. The run of EPs on Rough Trade between 1992 and 1994 is just as essential, moving from taut post punk into something genuinely strange and hard to categorise. The band split acrimoniously in 1995, and their final album Technicolour came out a year later. One Little Indian reissued much of the back catalogue in the 2000s, and a five EP compilation landed in 2011.
