Rolling Stone once called Downtown Boys "America's Most Exciting Punk Band," and it's not hard to hear why. The Providence group blends hardcore energy with saxophone, political fury, and vocalist Victoria Ruiz's blunt, clear eyed lyrics that take aim at cops, capitalism, and pretty much every system designed to keep people down. Their 2015 record Full Communism on Don Giovanni Records got serious attention from Pitchfork and Stereogum, and their 2017 Sub Pop release Cost of Living pushed them even further into the spotlight. Offstage, Downtown Boys put their politics where their music is. They played Coachella in 2017 then publicly called out the festival's business practices and donated part of their fee to LGBTQ organizations. They also helped force SXSW to drop a contract clause that threatened to work with ICE to deport foreign artists. On top of all that, they composed the soundtrack to the 2020 film Miss Marx, which picked up the David di Donatello award for Best Music and a Venice Film Festival Soundtrack Stars Award.
