About
Dr. Dog built their sound around the warm, hazy textures of 1960s and 70s rock, drawing heavily on the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Big Star while weaving in the lo fi scrappiness of 90s indie acts like Guided by Voices and Pavement. The Philadelphia band, led by the dual vocal chemistry of Toby Leaman and Scott McMicken, started releasing self recorded music in the early 2000s and gradually refined their production without losing that sun soaked, layered feel. Their catalog spans a run of records on Park the Van and then Anti Records, including standout albums like We All Belong, Fate, and Shame, Shame. Along the way they picked up TV appearances on Letterman, Conan, and Jimmy Fallon, and toured relentlessly. McMicken described Shame, Shame as pushing a more electric, punk leaning energy to better capture what the band sounds like live, which gives you a sense of how much they think about the gap between studio and stage.
