Few bands can claim a transatlantic smash as their very first single, but EMF pulled it off with "Unbelievable", which hit number 1 in the US and number 3 in the UK in 1991. The Cinderford, Gloucestershire outfit blended indie rock, dance rock and grebo into a sound that felt urgently of its moment, and their debut album Schubert Dip rode that energy to number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. "Unbelievable" sampled Andrew Dice Clay, while another track lifted a voice recording of Mark Chapman, drawing an injunction from Yoko Ono. After three albums, a greatest hits, and a string of hiatuses and reunions, EMF proved they had more than nostalgia to offer. In 2022 they released Go Go Sapiens, their first album of new original material in 27 years, and in 2024 they followed it with a fifth studio album, The Beauty and the Chaos, produced with longtime collaborator Ralph Jezzard and featuring Stephen Fry on the lead single "Hello People".
