About

Ensemble Resonanz occupies a genuinely unusual space in the classical world: a Hamburg based string ensemble that moves freely between new music premieres and historical repertoire, all without treating either as a compromise. Founded in 1994 by members of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, they became residents of the Elbphilharmonie when it opened and have been a fixture of Hamburg's concert life ever since. Their concert series urban string, running since 2011 in the city's Schanzenviertel, pulls classical music into club culture territory, which tells you a lot about how they think. Their recordings are just as eclectic: C.P.E. Bach symphonies sit alongside a Nick Cave and Schubert mashup featuring actor Charly Hübner, and a Bryce Dessner piece recorded with Moses Sumney. Long term collaborators include violist Tabea Zimmermann, conductor Riccardo Minasi, and composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and Rebecca Saunders. They made their BBC Proms debut in 2024 with an all Mozart programme conducted by Minasi.
