About
Erdling, which translates to "Earthling" in German, grew out of a lineup shake up when guitarist Neill Freiwald and drummer Niklas Kahl both left Stahlmann and formed something new together in 2014. Their debut album Aus den Tiefen dropped in January 2016, and by August of that year they were already on the M'era Luna Festival stage, one of the biggest gothic and metal events in Germany. The band's sound sits firmly in Neue Deutsche Härte territory, drawing on industrial metal and medieval textures, and their catalogue has leaned increasingly heavy over time. Their fourth album Yggdrasil from 2020 was built around Norse mythology, featuring guest appearances from Robert Dahn of Equilibrium and Chris Pohl of Blutengel. The lineup has shifted more than once over the years, but Freiwald has remained the constant driving force throughout.
