Ernst Reijseger treats the cello as a multi purpose instrument, drawing on classical training while throwing the rulebook out entirely. He bows it, plucks it like a guitar, thumps it like a bass, and beats it like a drum, all in service of a deeply personal approach to free improvisation. He is a Dutch musician from Bussum, working at the intersection of jazz, avant garde and free improvisation. The widest international spotlight found him through his musical contributions to the films of Werner Herzog, which brought his distinctive sound to audiences well beyond the jazz world.
