About
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was founded by conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, who remains at the helm and has built a sharp instinct for minimal music and contemporary repertoire. The choir holds a special place in Estonian musical life as the favourite ensemble of composer Arvo Pärt, and both Pärt and his compatriot Veljo Tormis have written works specifically for Kaljuste and his singers. That close connection to Estonian new music sits comfortably alongside a broader range: the choir moves with equal confidence through Frank Martin, Luciano Berio and Philip Glass. Frank Martin's Mass for Double Choir, his most celebrated work, is a piece he held onto for twenty years before sharing it with the world, and the choir's sensitivity to tonal nuance makes it a natural fit. Kaljuste's feel for timbre and spiritual depth runs through everything the ensemble touches, whether the intricate polyphony of Martin or the spare, hypnotic textures of Glass.
