Ethel Cain, the project of Hayden Silas Anhedönia, makes music that sits somewhere between Southern Gothic storytelling and slow, hazy soundscapes built from dream pop, slowcore, and dark ambient. Her debut album Preacher's Daughter (2022), released on her own label Daughters of Cain, is a concept record built around a fictional character who shares her name, and it earned serious critical love and a devoted cult following. The album's reach grew even further when a 2025 vinyl release pushed it into the top ten of the US Billboard 200, making Cain the first openly transgender artist to reach that milestone. Her career got its first real boost from the EP Inbred (2021), which included the single "Crush" and caught the attention of Pitchfork. She has since shared stages with Florence and the Machine and Caroline Polachek, played Coachella, and shown up as a guest vocalist for artists like Ashnikko. In 2025 she pushed further into drone music with the studio recording Perverts, then followed it up with a second album, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, written as a lyrical prequel to Preacher's Daughter.
