Under the name Gandalf, Austrian composer Heinz Strobl has been crafting atmospheric new age music since the early 1980s, blending guitar, keyboards, synthesizers and sitars with electronic textures into something genuinely transportive. His debut Journey to an Imaginary Land came out in 1981, and he barely paused before following it up with Visions less than a year later. Over four decades he has built one of the most extensive catalogues in the genre, ranging from Celtic influenced pieces to full symphonic landscapes, and even a collaboration with prog rock guitarist Steve Hackett on Gallery of Dreams. He has kept the output going well into recent years, with albums like Secret Sarai in 2020, Eartheana in 2023, and A Light From Afar in 2024 showing no signs of slowing down.
