Few bands can claim a No. 1 hit where the lead vocalist wasn't even a band member, but that's exactly what happened with Strawberry Alarm Clock. Their 1967 smash "Incense and Peppermints" featured Greg Munford, a 16 year old friend who happened to be around during recording sessions, and it shot straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, spending 16 weeks on the chart and going gold. The Glendale, California outfit mixed psychedelic rock, sunshine pop, and acid rock into a sound that felt both trippy and radio friendly. Beyond that landmark single, the band kept things interesting with a debut album of the same name that cracked the US top 15, followed by "Tomorrow" reaching No. 23 in early 1968. They toured alongside the Beach Boys and Buffalo Springfield, and their stage show leaned into the spectacle, with drummer Randy Seol rigging up wrist gas jets to make it look like he was playing with his hands on fire. Guitarist Ed King later went on to join Lynyrd Skynyrd, and early collaborator Steve Bartek eventually became Danny Elfman's go to film score orchestrator.
