About
Gang of Youths built their reputation the hard way, playing small Sydney venues and winning over crowds with a live show that people genuinely couldn't stop talking about. The band centres on David Le'aupepe, whose songwriting on their 2015 debut The Positions went to some deeply personal places, covering his then wife's cancer diagnosis, their separation, and his own battles with depression. That rawness translated into something people connected with hard, and the single "Magnolia" became their breakthrough, eventually going platinum. Their second album Go Farther in Lightness landed at number one in Australia in 2017 and won four ARIA Awards including Album of the Year. It was a genuinely massive moment for Australian rock. They kept that momentum going with Angel in Realtime in 2022, which debuted at number one in Australia and cracked the UK top ten, showing their reach had grown well beyond home turf.
