About
Genesis Owusu blends hip hop, funk, synth pop and alternative R&B into something that feels genuinely hard to pin down, and that restless quality is very much the point. Born in Ghana and raised in Canberra, he first turned heads with the 2017 EP Cardrive, mixing jazz inflected beats with a deep, confident voice. His debut album Smiling with No Teeth landed in early 2021 and swept the ARIA Awards, taking home Album of the Year, Best Hip Hop Release, Best Independent Release and Best Cover Art in one night. The follow up, Struggler, arrived in 2023 to critical acclaim, cementing him as one of the most interesting voices in Australian music. His third studio album, Redstar Wu and the Worldwide Scourge, came out in 2026, preceded by the anti capitalist single Pirate Radio. On top of the music, Owusu designs and makes his own clothes, running his own fashion line called Pur.
