Geordie Greep spent the better part of a decade as the frontman and lead guitarist of Black Midi, the London art rock outfit whose three albums on Rough Trade Records, Schlagenheim, Cavalcade, and Hellfire, earned them a Mercury Prize nomination and a reputation as one of the more thrillingly unpredictable bands of their generation. His songwriting leans into dramatic character driven narratives, and his singing voice is so stylistically distinctive that critics have called his accent "geographically unclassifiable". When Black Midi went on indefinite hiatus in 2024, Greep wasted no time launching a solo career under his own name, and also performs as MC Spritz. His debut album The New Sound arrived via Rough Trade in October 2024, and he has been playing it live, including a well documented set at TV Eye. The record sits comfortably in the art rock and jazz rock territory he has always gravitated toward, just without the band around him.
