About
Maruja are a Manchester quartet who make the kind of music that resists easy labelling. Their sound sits somewhere between post rock sprawl, jazz rock texture and noisy punk energy, with saxophonist Joe Carroll giving the band a genuinely distinct voice. NME's Rishi Shah summed it up as "noisy jazz punk", which is about as tidy as it gets. Their influences run from Kamasi Washington and Alice Coltrane through to Kendrick Lamar and Swans, and somehow that all makes sense when you hear them. The band really found their footing with the EPs Knocknarea in 2023 and Connla's Well in 2024, the latter described as "intense and compelling" and "a symphonic, crushing listen" by Paste magazine. After signing to Music for Nations, they released their debut album Pain to Power in September 2025, which cracked the UK Vinyl Albums Chart at number eleven. There is also The Vault, a set of six raw jam sessions from 2021 to 2023 that they dropped on YouTube and Bandcamp for the curious.
