Gilbert O'Sullivan built one of the most striking pop careers of the early 1970s on the back of a deliberately odd image, a bowl cut, cloth cap and short trousers, drawn from his love of silent film, and an equally distinctive percussive piano style rooted in his earlier years as a drummer. His songwriting voice is conversational and sharp, full of wordplay and observation, drawing comparisons to Paul McCartney and Randy Newman. The hits came thick and fast: "Nothing Rhymed", "Clair", and "Alone Again (Naturally)", which spent six non consecutive weeks at number one in the US and sold close to two million copies there alone. Record Mirror called him the top UK male singer of 1972, and he has picked up three Ivor Novello Awards including Songwriter of the Year. Across a career spanning 19 studio albums, he has landed 16 top 40 records worldwide, six of them number ones.
