About
Guido Belcanto, the Belgian kleinkunst singer from Turnhout, built his early reputation busking from café to café, drawing on the repertoire of artists like Zangeres Zonder Naam before developing his own voice as a chronicler of human desire, heartbreak and mortality. He has earned himself the nickname De Koning der Gebroken Harten, the King of Broken Hearts, which fits his particular gift for finding dark humor and genuine compassion in life's bleaker corners. His album Het Paviljoen der Menselijke Driften takes its name from Jef Lambeaux's monumental relief sculpture in Brussels, and it blends original material with murder ballads and his own interpretations of songs by Loudon Wainwright III, David McWilliams and Zangeres Zonder Naam. For the latter, he was given access to original recordings by the family of her discoverer Johnny Hoes. Live, he performs without a fixed concept, just a warm, seasoned voice shaped by years of love, longing and late nights.
