Hans Dulfer has been blowing tenor saxophone on his own terms since 1957, entirely self taught, and he built a reputation in Amsterdam as one of the more restless figures in Dutch jazz. At the end of the 1960s he co founded a quartet with organist Herbert Noord that leaned into saxophone and organ funk, and his debut album came out in 1970. Over the decades he moved freely between free jazz, jazz fusion and crossover territory, even collaborating with punk rockers along the way. In Japan he found an unexpectedly devoted following, with Hyperbeat becoming a top seller by instrumental standards, and Japanese filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa credited Dulfer's music as a companion to making his film Mind Game. He picked up the nickname "Big Boy" from his 1994 album of the same name. His daughter Candy Dulfer is herself a celebrated saxophonist, and the two recorded together on the 2002 album Dulfer and Dulfer.
