About
Harmen Fraanje is a Dutch jazz pianist and composer whose work sits comfortably at the intersection of contemporary jazz and free improvisation. Based in Amsterdam, he leads and co leads a range of projects, from a solo piano practice to a duo with Norwegian trumpet player Arve Henriksen, a trio with Finnish musicians Aino Peltomaa on voice and Mikko Perkola on viola da gamba, and a quartet with Magic Malik, Brice Soniano and Toma Gouband. These groups are built around original compositions with plenty of room to stretch out and improvise. As a sideman he is equally busy, appearing with the Mats Eilertsen Trio, Eric Vloeimans' Fugimundi trio with Anton Goudsmit, and Michael Moore's Fragile Quartet, performing at festivals and venues across the globe. His recordings have landed on labels including ECM, Hubro Music and Challenge Jazz, and his collaborators read like a who's who of the European and international jazz scene. He also chairs the Jazz Piano Faculty at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
