About
Eric Vaarzon Morel is a Dutch flamenco guitarist whose playing spans far beyond the traditional Spanish idiom. He studied under Paco Peña and spent two years living and working in Spain, then toured Europe with the Swiss group Flamencos en Route before spending six years as a core member of Cuadro Flamenco on Dutch theatre and concert stages. His own band Chanela cemented his reputation, and from there his collaborations stretched across genres, working with trumpet player Eric Vloeimans, guitarist Harry Sacksioni, and actor Gijs Scholten van Aschat. Vaarzon Morel has performed twice at the North Sea Jazz Festival and appeared multiple times on the Dutch TV show De Wereld Draait Door. The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw has performed his compositions on several occasions. In 2010 he staged a full evening opera about the life of painter El Greco, weaving jazz, classical music, and traditional flamenco into one show. He teaches at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and has collaborated internationally, including a recording titled From Sufi to Flamenco with Turkish qanun player Tahir Aydogdu.
