About
Stuurbaard Bakkebaard, also known as SBBB, started out as a nameless Dutch duo in 1996, making up songs on the spot while playing. A drummer joined in 1997 and the name stuck. From the start they built a reputation for unconventional instrument use, drawing early comparisons to G. Love, Tom Waits and de Kift. Their debut album Chuck landed in 2001 and quickly got them onto stages at Lowlands, Noorderslag and Oerol, among others. They later toured with Norway's Kaizers Orchestra and South African band Fokofpolisiekar. Over time the band pushed further into experimental territory. Their Beukorkest project, a sprawling collaborative venture with visual artist Rik van Iersel, pulled in up to 15 musicians from wildly different backgrounds, including Johnny Dowd, Gary Lucas and Kyteman, with styles spanning avant garde, hip hop, jazz, blues and spoken word. DJ DNA of Urban Dance Squad eventually became a full fourth member, his beats and scratches shaping the more electric sound of their fourth album L'Amour. The fifth record Boys Do Cry followed in 2013, recorded back as a three piece at a studio space in Eindhoven.
