About
I Am Oak is the project of Utrecht musician Thijs Kuijken, and it has a knack for turning quiet, acoustic folk into something that sticks. The band won the 3VOOR12 Award for best album in 2011 with Oasem, and played Popkomm that same year. Then came a run abroad: South by Southwest in Austin in 2012, and three shows at The Great Escape in Brighton, where the festival picked them as Band Of The Day. The third album, Nowhere Or Tammensaari, was recorded in a house in a small Finnish town whose name translates to oak island, which feels almost too fitting. Its single Palpable got played on BBC 6 Music by Lauren Laverne. Later came Ols Songd, a collection of old songs, some written before the debut, which critics mostly rated four out of five. Kuijken also teamed up with The Black Atlantic for the Black Oak 10 inch and toured Germany and Switzerland with it. More recent albums include Our Blood and Osmosis.
