About
Jaco Benckhuijsen is a musician, sea kayaker and writer whose work blurs the line between concert and expedition. His project IJS pairs live music with footage he shot himself, from a kayak, drifting among motionless icebergs in the fjords of Greenland, sometimes through patches of mist, under the midnight sun. The resulting performance combines string quartet and live electronics with his own compositions on piano, drawing comparisons to Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and the atmospheric textures of Radiohead. Before the music starts, Benckhuijsen, who has travelled to Greenland many times, gives a short illustrated talk on the island's history, nature and current affairs. It is a genuinely unusual thing: documentary, lecture and concert folded into one evening.
