About

Jake Xerxes Fussell has built a quietly remarkable career by digging deep into the American folk and blues tradition, not as a nostalgist but as someone who genuinely lives in that material. The Columbus, Georgia native spent his formative years playing alongside Piedmont blues legend Precious Bryant and learning from musicians who were direct links to an older South, and that immersion shows. His songs often come from genuinely obscure corners of the folk archive, including a 19th century fishmonger's cry reworked into the track "The River St. John's". His fourth album, Good and Green Again, marked a shift by mixing traditional adaptations with original compositions for the first time, produced by James Elkington. He followed that with When I'm Called in 2024 on Fat Possum Records, again produced by Elkington, blending traditional and newer material across nine songs. He has toured as an opener for Wilco, Bill Callahan, and The Decemberists, and his 2017 album What in the Natural World landed on The New Yorker's best albums list for that year.
