About

Few saxophonists cover as much ground as James Carter. The Detroit native plays across the full sweep of jazz history, from dixieland to free jazz to fusion, and he does it with a technical command that has earned him multiple DownBeat Critics and Readers Choice awards for baritone saxophone. He's equally at home on flute and clarinet, and he owns a serious collection of vintage saxophones, including one that once belonged to Don Byas. Carter broke onto the scene after a chance appearance with Lester Bowie at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1988 led to gigs in New York and eventually a move to the city. Since then he's recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Mingus Big Band, among many others. He also had a memorable turn in Robert Altman's film Kansas City, playing the role of Ben Webster alongside Joshua Redman and Craig Handy. His 2023 release Un on JMI Recordings is his most recent album.
