About
Also known as: Joshua Redman Shedroff
Joshua Redman plays tenor saxophone with the kind of fluency that makes sense once you know he grew up around jazz royalty, being the son of saxophonist Dewey Redman. What's remarkable is that he's largely self taught on the instrument, drawing from a wide range of influences that run from John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman to Prince and Led Zeppelin. He won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991 and signed with Warner Bros. Records shortly after, releasing a debut album that earned him a Grammy nomination. Over the decades Redman has kept restless company: his second album Wish featured Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, and his mid period quartet with Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade became one of the most celebrated small groups in contemporary jazz. He co founded the SFJAZZ Collective and has explored piano less trio formats, double trio arrangements and long running collaborations with musicians like Brian Blade and Christian McBride. His most recent album, Words Fall Short, arrived in 2025.
