Branford Marsalis has spent decades proving that a saxophonist can move fluently between jazz, classical stages, and pop without losing an ounce of credibility. He leads the Branford Marsalis Quartet, which he founded in 1986 with pianist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff Watts, and bassist Robert Hurst, and the group's 1992 album I Heard You Twice the First Time won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. He also co starred in Spike Lee's School Daze, sat in with the Grateful Dead multiple times, and spent three years as bandleader of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, a gig he famously and bluntly described as not for him. Outside the quartet, Marsalis has kept busy on several fronts. He toured and recorded extensively with Sting from 1985 onward, played on the hip hop tinged Buckshot LeFonque project, and founded his own imprint, Marsalis Music, in 2002. He also performs as a soloist with classical ensembles, rounding out a career that resists easy categorisation. His quartet's album Four MFs Playin' Tunes shows the group still firing on all cylinders.
