About
With over 400 recordings as a sideman and eleven Grammy Awards to his name, Christian McBride is one of the most in demand bassists in jazz. The Philadelphia native has played alongside an extraordinary range of musicians, from Freddie Hubbard and Chick Corea to Sting, Paul McCartney, and James Brown, and he handles both double bass and bass guitar with equal confidence. He can even solo arco style, a nod to his command of the instrument. Since releasing his debut Gettin' to It in 1995, McBride has led a string of groups spanning hard bop trios, an 18 piece big band, an experimental funk outfit, and his current ensemble Ursa Major. His big band album The Good Feeling earned him a Grammy, and he spent nearly a decade as artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival. He also hosts NPR's Jazz Night In America, keeping one foot firmly in the broadcast world while staying busy in the studio and on stage.
