Few bands captured the 1990s London funk and acid jazz scene quite like Jamiroquai. Built around the singular personality of vocalist Jay Kay, the group blended acid jazz, funk, disco, and elements of rock and Latin music into a sound that was both club ready and chart friendly. Three of their albums hit number one in the UK, Emergency on Planet Earth, Synkronized, and A Funk Odyssey, while their third record Travelling Without Moving earned a Guinness World Record as the best selling funk album in history, with over 8 million copies sold. The music video for 'Virtual Insanity' became just as iconic as the song itself, winning Video of the Year at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and a Grammy in 1998. 'Deeper Underground', recorded for the Godzilla soundtrack, gave them a UK number one single. By 2017 the band had shifted more than 26 million albums worldwide and released Automaton, their eighth studio record. Kay has been the only constant member across numerous lineup shifts, keeping the group's groove heavy identity intact throughout.
