About
Jasper Blom is a Dutch jazz tenor saxophonist whose playing leans toward the horizontal and exploratory side of the music, favouring melodic lines that travel outward rather than staying locked to chord structures. He won the Boy Edgar Prijs in 2019, one of the most significant awards in Dutch jazz, and a recording he made with the Metropole Orkest was named Pick of the Week by DownBeat magazine. More recently he has been working as co leader of Crosswords, a quintet he shares with alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder. The group is built around the contrast between van Gelder's vertical, lyrical writing and Blom's more searching compositional approach, and deliberately leaves out any chordal instrument, giving the music an open, transparent quality.
