About
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is a Dutch big band with a strong sense of history and a restless appetite for collaboration. One of their ongoing projects, Dutch Jazz Heritage, puts a spotlight on landmark moments and figures in Dutch jazz history, developed together with the Nederlands Jazz Archief. That series has taken the orchestra deep into the music of artists like Ella Fitzgerald, whose two performances at the Concertgebouw are the stuff of legend, and Kid Dynamite, a Surinamese tenor saxophonist who made his name in the Netherlands from the 1930s onward. The orchestra also pushes well beyond the concert hall format. For Storm, a specially assembled sextet drawn from the orchestra joined forces with dance company OFFprojects and British multi instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings to build a piece rooted in minimalism and Ugandan pattern based music. Jazz and contemporary dance blur together, with both musicians and dancers moving between fixed phrases and open improvisation, so no two performances are alike.
