About
Jazz Sabbath is the brainchild of Adam Wakeman, long time touring keyboardist for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, and the whole thing is built around a gloriously absurd premise: that Jazz Sabbath were actually a late sixties jazz trio who wrote all the Black Sabbath classics first, and that Black Sabbath stole every single one of them. The bit was introduced via a mockumentary on YouTube in early 2020, with actor Robert Powell interviewing fictional band leader Milton Keanes, and the joke landed hard enough that an actual album followed shortly after. Three studio albums in, the project has become genuinely impressive beyond the gag. Jazz renditions of "Iron Man", "Paranoid", "War Pigs" and company turn out to work surprisingly well as smoky, improvisational jazz pieces. The debut charted at number one on iTunes jazz in Canada, Vol. 2 hit number one in the UK, US and Canada, and the third record, The 1968 Tapes, arrived in late 2024. The band even plays live, with a rotating cast that has included Rick Wakeman and guitarist Gus G sitting in as tour guests.
