About
Also known as: Baez, Joan, Joan Beaz, Joan Chandos Báez
Joan Baez has one of the most immediately recognizable voices in American folk music, and a catalog that spans more than 30 albums across six decades of performing. She broke through fast: her first three albums all went gold, and by the early 1960s she was already an internationally celebrated artist. That platform helped launch Bob Dylan's career, as she was among the first major acts to record his songs and championed his early work to her audience. Their relationship, famously complicated, later inspired songs from both of them. Her own signature song, "Diamonds and Rust", sits alongside a string of memorable covers including "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "There but for Fortune", and "We Shall Overcome". Though rooted in folk, her sound stretches across folk rock, country, gospel, and pop. She performed fourteen songs at Woodstock in 1969 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Since stepping away from the stage in 2019, she has turned her focus to portraiture and poetry.
