Johnathan Blake is one of the most in demand drummers working in jazz today, with over 70 recording sessions to his name since 1996. A Philadelphia native, he built his reputation as a sideman across an impressive range of projects, from the Mingus Big Band's Grammy nominated albums Tonight at Noon and I Am Three, to sessions with Roy Hargrove, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell and Dr. Lonnie Smith. His versatility and deep post bop instincts made him a go to collaborator for decades before he fully stepped into the spotlight as a leader. His own discography is genuinely worth digging into. The 2019 double album Trion, recorded with Chris Potter and Linda Oh, showed how much ground his trio could cover, and his Blue Note run has been strong: Homeward Bound in 2021, then Passage in 2023, a tribute to his late father. His most recent Blue Note release, My Life Matters, is a commissioned suite wrestling with family values and social justice.
