Julian Prégardien is a German tenor who has built a reputation across opera, oratorio, and Lied, making him one of the more versatile classical singers working today. Based in Frankfurt, he spent several seasons at the Frankfurt Opera taking on lyric tenor roles like Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, and he has appeared at major venues from the Opéra de Monte Carlo to the Theater an der Wien. His concert work leans heavily toward Baroque repertoire, collaborating with period ensembles such as Ricercar Consort and Il Complesso Barocco, and his recording of Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor picked up the MIDEM Classical Award in 2007. His Lied recitals are a particular passion, and he has a knack for building programs that mix song cycles with chamber music in unexpected ways. The project Schumann ex tempore, developed with the Gémeaux Quartet and pianist Michael Gees, is a good example: it takes Schumann's song cycle Op. 24, arranges it for string quartet, and weaves in improvised piano interludes. He has also performed in father and son recitals alongside his father, the tenor Christoph Prégardien, and since 2017 he has held a professorship in voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
