Julien Clerc burst onto the French music scene in 1968 with "La cavalerie", a song that caught the rebellious spirit of the moment and turned him into a voice for French youth almost overnight. Born Paul Alain Leclerc in Paris, he adopted his stage name when signing with Pathé Marconi, and his debut album promptly won the Académie Charles Cros Record Award. By 24 he was already a major star, stacking up hits that were translated and sold across multiple countries. Over a career spanning decades, Clerc has ranged from rock and pop driven shows to stripped back acoustic sets, from classic French standards to an album of American songs sung in French. He starred in the Paris run of Hair, performed at the Olympia repeatedly, and has taken his music to audiences across Africa, the Americas and Europe. Beyond the stage, he served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, working on behalf of refugees. His discography runs deep, with his most recent album Une vie appearing in 2025.
