When Karina Canellakis stepped onto the podium at the First Night of the Proms in July 2019, she became the first woman ever to conduct that opening concert at the Royal Albert Hall. That kind of trailblazing runs through her whole career: she was also the first female conductor to lead the Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm, the first woman named principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the first female chief conductor of any Dutch orchestra. She started out as a violinist, trained at Curtis and later at Juilliard, and even played with the Berlin Philharmonic's Orchester Akademie before making the full switch to the podium. Since 2019 she has been chief conductor of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in the Netherlands, a post extended through 2031, and she records with both Deutsche Grammophon and PENTATONE. Her repertoire stretches from Shostakovich symphonies to contemporary chamber opera, and she has worked closely with the International Contemporary Ensemble. One early career moment that stuck: in October 2014 she stepped in for Jaap van Zweden with Shostakovich's colossal Eighth Symphony, no rehearsal, no warning.
