Karina Canellakis serves as chief conductor of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, a position that has given her a natural home for the big Austro German repertoire. She has returned to Mahler's symphonies more than once with the ensemble, and her programming choices show a clear instinct for context: pairing Mahler's Fourth with songs by Alban Berg and a short piece by Kaija Saariaho, for instance, rather than letting the symphony stand alone. Her work with the orchestra spans oratorio as well as the symphonic canon, including a full staging of Mendelssohn's epic two hour oratorio Elias, a rarely performed piece that Mendelssohn modelled on the Bach and Handel passions and poured his final creative energy into before his death.
