About
Joana Mallwitz has carved out a string of historic firsts in classical conducting. When she stepped in to conduct Madama Butterfly in Heidelberg on six hours' notice early in her career, it set the tone for a trajectory full of bold moves. She went on to become the youngest General Music Director of a German opera house when she took the top post at Theater Erfurt, and later made history at the Salzburg Festival as the first female conductor ever to be formally scheduled in advance for an opera production there, leading Così fan tutte in 2020. That production is preserved on a Deutsche Grammophon DVD. Since the 2023 to 2024 season, Mallwitz has been chief conductor and artistic director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the first woman to lead any Berlin orchestra in that role. Her contract runs through 2032 to 2033. Opernwelt named her Conductor of the Year in 2019, and in 2025 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera conducting The Marriage of Figaro.
