King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, the Melbourne six piece, have built one of the most restless and genuinely bewildering catalogues in modern rock. Spanning psychedelic rock, thrash metal, jazz, synth pop and plenty more, their output is less a discography and more an ongoing experiment that refuses to sit still. Their 2022 alone saw five studio albums drop, including Changes, the third of October's trilogy, and arguably the most carefully crafted of the bunch. Built around a single chord progression, every track on Changes grows out of the 13 minute opener, with Stu Mackenzie describing the whole record as a song cycle rather than a collection of separate tunes. The album had actually been gestating since 2017, making it the longest the band ever spent developing a single record. The warm, keyboard drenched sound draws on 70s R&B and prog while still feeling unmistakably like them. With a catalogue pushing close to forty studio and live albums, King Gizzard keep finding new corners to explore, and their fanbase, known as the Gizzverse, follows every twist with genuine devotion.
