About
Few tracks in recent memory spread the way KOKOROKO's "Abusey Junction" did, racking up 57 million YouTube plays and winning Track of the Year at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards in 2019. The London septet, led by Sheila Maurice Grey and Onome Edgeworth, blends afrobeat, highlife and jazz into something that feels both rooted and forward moving. Their name comes from the Urhobo word for "be strong" or "hard to break", which suits the density and drive of their sound. Their debut album Could We Be More arrived in August 2022 and landed on The Guardian's list of the top ten jazz albums of that year, cementing them as one of the more serious acts in London's jazz scene. They have also played BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and won Best Group at the Urban Music Awards. Their second album, Tuff Times Never Last, followed in July 2025.
