About
Winning the first prize at the Bruges Fortepiano Competition at just 21 set Kristian Bezuidenhout on a path that few keyboard players travel. The South African born, Australian trained pianist works almost exclusively on historical instruments, moving between fortepiano, harpsichord and early keyboards depending on the repertoire, and he deliberately keeps his focus on music from the Baroque through to the Romantic era. That specificity is not a limitation so much as a commitment: he has been open about caring more for expressive truth than for strict period style, famously brushing off criticism that his Mozart sounds too Romantic. He has appeared with some of the leading period ensembles around, including the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Concerto Köln, Collegium Vocale Gent and Les Arts Florissants, alongside conductors like Philippe Herreweghe, John Eliot Gardiner and Frans Brüggen. His recordings for Harmonia Mundi cover Mozart's complete keyboard sonatas, Beethoven piano concertos and a Mendelssohn project, all played on period or replica instruments. He has also recorded Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin and Bach violin and harpsichord sonatas with Isabelle Faust.
