Before Guns N' Roses ever existed, there was L.A. Guns. Tracii Guns formed the band in Los Angeles in 1983, and the original lineup actually merged with Hollywood Rose to become GNR before Guns split and rebuilt L.A. Guns with a fresh crew. That classic lineup, anchored by vocalist Phil Lewis and drummer Steve Riley, hit its stride in the late 1980s with the 1988 self titled debut peaking at number 50 on the Billboard 200. The follow up, Cocked and Loaded, climbed even higher to number 38 and went RIAA Gold, driven by the melodic hard rock ballad The Ballad of Jayne, which cracked the top 25 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick even showed up on that record. The band's history is a tangle of lineup shuffles, parallel versions touring under the same name, and brief supergroup detours, including Guns teaming up with Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe in Brides of Destruction. Through all of it, L.A. Guns kept releasing music, racking up sixteen studio albums over the decades. Their 2022 video for Never Enough shows the current lineup, featuring Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis, still very much active.
