About

Lahav Shani pulls off something genuinely rare: he conducts, plays piano, and holds his own on double bass, and he does all three at a serious professional level. The Tel Aviv born Israeli made a striking impression on the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in June 2016, when a single guest appearance as both conductor and piano soloist was enough for the musicians to vote him unanimously as their next chief conductor, making him the youngest person ever to hold that post. He had already won the International Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2013 and stepped in for Franz Welser Möst with the Vienna Philharmonic as an emergency substitute in 2015, conducting and playing piano in the same concert. Shani has been music director of the Israel Philharmonic since the 2020 to 2021 season, a contract now extended to 2032, and he is set to take over as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic from the 2026 to 2027 season. He also gives solo piano recitals and lives in Berlin. His work spans symphonic and orchestral repertoire, and he has built a reputation for combining conducting duties with playing from the keyboard, a combination that keeps audiences and orchestras genuinely curious about what he will do next.
