About

Few bands have courted controversy as deliberately or as cleverly as Laibach. Formed in 1980 in the Slovenian mining town of Trbovlje, they built their identity around provocative pastiches of totalitarian imagery, nationalism and militarism, getting themselves banned in Yugoslavia before they'd even released a record. The deep, commanding bass vocals of Milan Fras became their sonic signature, set against heavy rhythms, industrial noise and layers of samples drawn from pop and classical music. Their 1987 album Opus Dei on Mute Records brought them international attention, largely through absurdist Wagnerian reworkings of Queen's One Vision and Opus's Life is Life. They kept the cover version game going for years, turning cheerful pop melodies into something that sounds like a military parade through a haunted castle. Their 2006 album Volk tackled fourteen national anthems with the same unnerving treatment. In 2015 they made headlines as the first Western pop act to perform in Pyongyang, North Korea.
