Larry Grenadier is one of the most in demand double bassists in contemporary jazz, a reputation built largely through his long running partnership with pianist Brad Mehldau. He joined Mehldau's trio in the early 1990s alongside drummer Jorge Rossy, and together they recorded and toured for over a decade, producing a string of albums that reshaped how listeners thought about jazz piano trios. Drummer Jeff Ballard stepped in for Rossy in 2004, and the trio kept going strong. Beyond Mehldau, Grenadier has kept remarkably wide company. He toured with Pat Metheny in a trio setting, played with Charles Lloyd, John Scofield, and Michael Brecker, and is a core member of FLY, a trio with Ballard and saxophonist Mark Turner that has put out three records. His 2019 solo album The Gleaners, released on ECM, stands apart from all of it as a rare, meditative showcase for unaccompanied bass. He also records and tours with his wife, singer and songwriter Rebecca Martin.
